In the aftermath of the 2013 Boston Marathon terrorist attack, the sporting world has faced a host of new security challenges. The August 2014 edition of ICSS Journal looks at how the bombing affected subsequent events such as the London Marathon, which attracted increased security concern and media attention.
This edition also examines the affect of geopolitics on sporting events, outlining how economic sanctions imposed by the US amid the ongoing Ukraine crisis could begin to have an impact on Russian sport. The Journal also explores the threat to security posed by fanatical football supporters by observing the growing trend of ultras in Morocco; considers the legal and medical concerns associated with participant safety in American sport; and looks at how women and girls are being empowered through sport.
