In the light of the UK government’s recent Strategic Defence and Security Review the need to make a clear and compelling case for a highly capable maritime force is more pressing than ever. This is one of the reasons that the 2010/2011 edition of the Royal Navy’s official publication, A Global Force has been so well received. Commenting on the yearbook, First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope, said he strongly commends A Global Force, as the articles “explain very well the range and complexity of the tasks” that the Royal Navy is assigned. Themes covered by the latest edition of A Global Force include the Royal Navy’s purpose and vision; an overview of its warfare capacity, technology and contribution to national security; the fight against piracy, terrorism and illegal activity at sea; and the humanitarian support it provides in crisis situations.
