Published in 2008 on behalf of the Ministry of Defence (MOD), UK Defence offers readers an overview of the Armed Forces, examining and explaining their role in defending the United Kingdom and its interests in the modern world. Contributors include Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup, Chief of the Defence Staff, The First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Jonathon Band, Chief of the Naval Staff, General Sir Richard Dannatt, Chief of the General Staff, and Air Chief Marshal Sir Glenn Torpy, Chief of the Air Staff. Key issues discussed include Defence Diplomacy and the role of international security organisations, notably NATO, how the MOD cares for its people and the advancements in equipment and technology. UK Defence also illustrates how the Armed Forces are structured and, given the increasingly joint nature of current operations, how their capabilities are fused together at the tactical and operational levels. The publication also provides a 2008 update on operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as reports on less well publicised work on humanitarian operations and support to the civil authorities at home.
UK Defence was launched at One Whitehall Place in London.
