A New Birth of Freedom

A New Birth of Freedom was published on behalf of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. The year 2009 also marked the inauguration of the US's first African-American president, Barack Obama, who chose Lincoln as the theme for many inaugural activities.

A New Birth of Freedom follows Lincoln's life and beyond, from his birthplace and hometowns, his achievements as president, and his role in shaping the development of modern America – from education and law, to finance and infrastructure.

The publication is edited by former Chicago Tribune Editor and Notre Dame Professor Don Wycliff. Forewords are provided by President Barack Obama, and by Co-Chairs of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission: Senator Richard J Durbin, Ray LaHood and Harold Holzer.
